Dawn Weather Net
The weather net started in 1980 on the 145.35 repeater. At that time Someone named Bill whose call was N7BKY living in a place called Clear Creek Pines near Camp Verde started what is today the Daily Arizona Weather Net but it did not start out as a weather net but it wasn't long before it became one. At the time of the net's start the repeater was owned by a Bill Davis from Denver WD0GQL and the repeater's antenna was at the very top of the tower, so the repeater was able to reach Yuma and so Maynard ( then KA7GXD) was checking in from there and also Luther Light N7DAI, also in Yuma at the time. The Funks and I joined the net in 1981. Jack Sheahan WB7UUL took over the net in 81 and was sole net control through the mid 80s. Also during the 80s and part of the 90s the net went for an hour and two net controls handled the hour long net, Mary Turner KA6RCM and myself did net control duty in the second half. The net shortened to a half hour during the time that Dick Thompson, W7KAU was involved in our net, he was the one who suggested it be shortened to a half hour like it is today. Charlie's Angels got started in the 80s, Slim, W7LOA, Ray, K7OMR, Jane Allen, WB7FDF and Charlie WA7HUH and Doug KA7DHJ were active then. Jane joined the net around 1982. Also in the 80s Bill, WD0GQL phased out of the 35 machine and Buck Henderson, KA7IOG put his callsign on the repeater and maintained the repeater for a few years. The Weather Net incorporated in 1986, Steve Early KC8PJ came into our group in 1985-1986 period and Arlo Abbott, KA7VAT got involved after we incorporated. Jack Sheahan and Dr. John VanSuch, KA7OBH? quit the net completely in this time period. Also in 1985 our group joined forces with KTSP channel 10, initiated by a big party including tour of channel 10 Weather Center and met Dave Munsey, Jim Schnebelt and Ed Phillips. Mary Turner, KA6RCM joined the group at this time, she and her husband moved to Lake Montezuma then. Also in the 80s from the beginning till 1985, Stan Girdner WB7BZH had a group from western Arizona, southeast California and southern Nevada each day, it was wonderful getting weather from that part of the state. During the late 80s up to the present have seen new people coming into the group and rotating net controls scheduled by Steve Early, KC8PJ. Mel Cooper, WB7SJP is going to be leaving us for Plano, Texas soon, she has been part of our net since the 80s, she will be missed by all of us who have known her. I remember the early spring Flings out at Jane's beginning in 1983 and the times when Frank and Peggy brought all this wonderful shrimp from Mexico and it was deep fried, ah delicious!. In the 80s I hosted the summer parties at our home in Munds Park at hamfest time and a weather net booth was set up in the main building at the fairgrounds to encourage new members during hamfests. Hank Boyce, W2RVS was active in the 80s with his wife Barbara, they bought the home with a tennis court and at one of the parties some of the people played tennis
